Dr. Cherington serves as the Division Director of Genitourinary malignancies. While he is trained and board-certified in all areas of Medical Oncology and Hematology, he specializes in genitourinary, brain and skin cancers, as well as sarcomas and hematologic disorders. He joined Ironwood Cancer & Research Centers in July 2016 after completing his Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. An Arizona native, he earned an undergraduate degree in Biology and minor in Spanish (conversational Spanish) at Arizona State University prior to attending the University of Arizona for his medical doctorate.
In his youth, Dr. Cherington developed a passion for fighting cancer when a childhood friend was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor. His friend’s life was ultimately lost to this aggressive cancer, but her tumor cells were donated to research new therapies. Years later, Dr. Cherington spent time at Barrow Neurological Institute investigating cell lines that most likely included his friend’s saved cells. The fire that was ignited as a child was further fueled when his step-sister lost her life to cancer as a young adult. Today, in each new patient, Dr. Cherington sees a friend or family member who deserves the utmost compassion and care on the cutting edge of advancement.
In addition to providing clinical trials for his patients, Dr. Cherington is interested in the ways in which lifestyle, integrative therapies, and nutrition could impact cancer growth and treatment. He works within Ironwood’s Integrative Oncology Clinic and has earned certificates in Nutrition & Cancer, Environmental Health, Integrative Approaches to Cancer, Introduction to Integrative Oncology, and more from The University of Arizona Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine, as well as his Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies at eCornell. Dr. Cherington has performed clinical research and presented his work at both the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology. He has also been featured as a Top Doctor in Phoenix Magazine. However, what he values most is receiving the Gold Humanism Award, which recognized him as a physician that other doctors would choose for themselves or their family members.
