What is Head and Neck Cancer and How Common is It?
April is Head and neck cancer awareness month, Dr. Syed Akbar, Medical Oncologist and Dr. Ammoren Dohm, Radiation Oncologist specializing in lung, head, and neck cancers, from Ironwood Cancer & Research Centers, recently appeared on Your Life Arizona to discuss what head and neck cancer is and how common it is.
Head and neck cancer includes various cancers originating in the head and neck region, such as the mouth, tongue, throat, voice box, salivary glands, nasal cavities, and sinuses. It accounts for 4.5% of cancer diagnoses, typically affecting males over 50. In the U.S., there are approximately 71,100 cases.
Causes, Symptoms, and Early Detection
Head and neck cancer is primarily caused by tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, or an HPV infection. Other less common risk factors include a weak immune system, rare genetic disorders, and prior exposure to radiation and cancer-causing chemicals. Common symptoms include:
Persistent sore throat
Hoarseness
Mouth pain
Difficulty swallowing
Lumps in the mouth, throat, or neck
Non-healing sores
Early detection through a biopsy is crucial, as the chances of curing this cancer are highest when caught early. Preventive measures include quitting tobacco, reducing alcohol intake, and getting the HPV vaccine. If you experience any symptoms, consult your healthcare provider immediately for evaluation and biopsy.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy involves using high-energy beams, like X-rays, to kill or stop the growth of cancer cells. Often combined with chemotherapy, radiation can serve as a curative treatment without the need for surgery. This approach is particularly beneficial for cancers like those of the vocal cords, where preserving voice quality is crucial. Technological advancements such as Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) allow for pinpoint accuracy, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues.
