Dr. Farooqui Visits Capitol Hill

On May 16, 2023, Dr. Azam Farooqui was one of 19 members of the American Society of Hematology’s Committee on Practice who visited Capitol Hill to urge Members of Congress to advocate for patients suffering from hematologic illness.

Dr. Farooqui and his colleagues met with the offices of Arizona senators Mark Kelly and Krysten Sinema as well as Connecticut senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal to discuss various healthcare issues. This year’s legislation focused on increasing access to care for Sickle Cell Disease patients by supporting the Sickle Cell Disease Comprehensive Care Act and the Sickle Cell Care Expansion Act, as well as stabilization of Medicare reimbursements by supporting the Strengthening Medicare for Patients and Providers Act. Dr. Farooqui has been involved with ASH for the past three years and will continue to work on patient advocacy along with his clinical duties.

Each year, this team from ASH visits Congress multiple times to help move healthcare, and the field of hematology, forward. We thank the senators for their time and interest in these issues!
