Reiki and Cancer
Reiki, a form of energy healing that originated in Japan, is often used as a complementary therapy for cancer patients. While it is not a substitute for medical treatment, many patients find Reiki helpful for managing stress, anxiety, and pain.
What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a form of energy healing that involves a practitioner placing their hands lightly on or just above a patient’s body. Long distance energy work is also commonly practiced. The goal is to channel universal energy to promote relaxation and balance.
Benefits for Cancer Patients
While scientific evidence on Reiki is limited, some patients report benefits such as:
Stress and Anxiety Reduction: Reiki sessions can promote deep relaxation, helping patients cope with the emotional challenges of cancer.
Pain Management: Some studies suggest Reiki may help reduce pain perception, though more research is needed.
Improved Sleep: Many patients report better sleep quality after Reiki sessions.
Emotional Support: Reiki may provide a sense of peace and emotional well-being.
Many hospitals and cancer centers offer Reiki as part of integrative oncology programs. Ironwood Cancer and Research Centers offers a free long distance Reiki session held every 3rd Friday at 10:00 am. Email wellness@ironwoodcrc.com or call 480-314-6660 to sign up or for more information.
